Amazon Prime Video will stream the Emmy Awards exclusively starting in 2027, following a six-year agreement with the Television Academy announced Tuesday. The ceremony will remain free for all viewers, including nonsubscribers, across more than 240 countries and territories. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
The move ends a decades-long broadcast rotation that had cycled the awards among ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox each year. NBC, owned by Comcast, aired the 2026 ceremony on Sept. 14. The rotating system operated since at least 1994, with its most recent eight-year contract expiring this year.
Television Academy chair Cris Abrego described Prime Video as the permanent home for the Emmys. "Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share," Abrego said. The partnership also expands the Academy's year-round outreach and supports its broader mission beyond the annual telecast.
The shift mirrors a wider industry transition as viewers increasingly abandon traditional cable and broadcast television for on-demand platforms. Streaming services have steadily taken over live event rights from legacy networks. The Oscars will move to Alphabet's YouTube and YouTube TV in 2029, while Netflix has exclusively streamed the SAG Awards since 2024.
