Jaguar unveiled its new all-electric Type 01 model on Tuesday at an event in New York City. The four-door grand tourer carries a starting price of around $130,500 in the U.S. and £130,000 in the U.K. The launch marks a radical shift for the British automaker, owned by India's Tata Motors, as it pushes forward with a fully electric lineup.
The vehicle features an ultra-long bonnet, a low roofline, and frameless doors. A camera system replaced the traditional rear window. The car delivers a driving range of up to 450 miles and accelerates from 0-62 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds. Engineers built the model to be the brand's most advanced, powerful, and aerodynamic vehicle to date.
The rollout arrives during a difficult period for Jaguar Land Rover. The company recently announced it would cut 4,000 jobs as part of a major cost-cutting drive. Production also faced disruptions last year after a cyberattack forced a temporary halt.
The electric push follows a controversial rebrand in November 2024 that sparked a social media backlash. A 30-second promotional clip featured models in bright clothing without showing a car or the brand's traditional cat logo. Elon Musk questioned the campaign on X, asking if the company actually sells vehicles. Jaguar defended the approach to Sky News, stating the brand wanted "to be bold and disruptive."
JLR CEO PB Balaji called the unveiling the start of "an exciting new era" for the marque. He said the model combines British heritage and advanced engineering to attract a new generation of buyers. The launch places Jaguar in direct competition with Ferrari and Bentley, both of which introduced their first electric vehicles this year as luxury makers test wealthy consumer demand.
