Ethiopian government forces and their militia allies entered Adigrat in northern Tigray on Saturday, Oct 10, after rebel fighters withdrew from the border town. The advance comes as tensions with Eritrea have surged following the severing of diplomatic ties and reports of Eritrean military movements in the region.
Residents of Adigrat reported seeing truck loads of Eritrean soldiers moving south through the area. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of launching an unprovoked incursion, a claim that contributed to the escalation of hostilities between the two neighbours.
The military developments followed a sharp diplomatic breakdown. Ethiopia and Eritrea cut off diplomatic ties last week and traded accusations on Friday regarding who started a war of aggression. Ethiopia subsequently demanded that Eritrean troops withdraw from Tigray, a request Eritrea rejected.
Ethiopian military vehicles and government forces also moved into Shire, further consolidating control over the region. As federal forces advanced, some residents celebrated the return of government troops. Air travel has resumed with flights to Mekelle restarting.
